Newseum Assignment
April 2, 2009

I liked “The Intelligencer” for its use of fonts and text. Most of the headlines are in an easy-to-read serif font, and the most important headline is bold and sans-serif, making it stand out from the rest. Also, the use of teasers at the top is neat and organized looking. Overall, it’s very pleasing to the eye.

I chose the “San Fransisco Chronicle” for best pictures. The top story shows a striking, but simple image of wire towers against the sunset. I really enjoy the choice of similarly colored photos for the rest of the front page. The orange-red scheme (including teasers at the bottom) looks nice and stands out against the rest of the text.

The “Fort Worth Star-Telegram” is my pick for best graphics. I love the RaceWeek graphic above the main photo. It really catches the eye in a clever way and provides info to the reader. Also, the tan box on the bottom right-hand side is nicely organized.

Julie’s Photo Essay – A Day at the Rink
February 13, 2009

This photo documents the beginning of a February trip to the River Rink at Penn's Landing. It was a beautiful day, made evident by the sunny, blue sky.

While waiting in line for tickets, these colorful silhouettes of skaters stood out against the sky over the water.

We rented our ice skates inside at the counter. I liked the mess of skates amongst the boxy, geometric cubbies.

This picture captures the sun peeking through the city buildings. The shine brightened up the ice and warmed the faces of the skaters.

Here, a view from down below shows the detail of the snowy ice and the shadows projected from the skates.

Amidst the blurry motion of all the other skaters was this little boy, whose smiling face lit up the camera. All the focus is drawn to him.

These two girls paused for a minute to look out at the water. The tree branches are nicely silhouetted against a dimming sky.

This picture captures a playful relationship between two skaters. I caught them in motion, doing a twirl.

During a break from skating, we decided to test out the game room at the rink. The shadows here add an intense feeling to the picture.

At the end of the evening, the lights shone down on the ice, illuminating the grooves and lines the skates had carved that day.

The final photo is from the ice skate's point of view, resting on the ground after a day in motion.

I’m a long time fan of TIME magazine and I think they have some of the world’s best photographers on staff. This particular photo essay from December ’08 is titled: Life Returns to Iraq’s Streets. I always admire photojournalists who aren’t afraid to get right in the middle of things and capture that “real” shot. The way this photographer mixed color, contour and human faces evokes a lot of emotion. It’s a nice contrast to the war pictures we are bombarded with on the news all the time. Enjoy!
